An American Fly Fishing Historic Estate

The story of this area reads something like a Who’s Who of American Fly Fishing. The sport began and techniques refined on these waters. Of all the Catskill streams, most would argue that the small, wild and unique character of the Neversink River fishery is superior to them all. On this very stretch of water Edward Ringwood Hewitt himself fished and experimented on the private, peaceful oasis of gin clear water. Hewitt, George La Branche, and Theodore Gordon were all at home on this stretch of water. Numerous books and stories were written about these pioneers fishing this water and how their experiences here profoundly impacted the fly fishing and American cultures.

The River and Grounds

Today, this remarkable, private oasis is available for those that wish to share in the rich history and continue the epic legacy on what can only be considered a definitive sportsman’s paradise. It’s a simple fact that this stretch of the Neversink is the best of the best in terms of wild trout and land locked salmon fishing, with a setting that rivals anything in the country and provides the feeling that you are thousands of miles from the nearest human. The turquoise blue deep pools and clear long runs of the river cannot be described in words but are the centerpiece of every angler’s dreams.

Located within 660+ acres, nearly three quarters of a mile of the river is entirely private, and entirely yours. The terrain ranges from steep and rocky to level, flat, and tillable soil where the family used to grow corn. Tall whispering white pines and large majestic oak trees are plentiful. The abundant deer and ruffed grouse sign in the private apple orchard reinforce the fact that this place is pure paradise.  As you approach the series of spring-fed ponds you can hear the green frogs splash in retreat, warblers fly off into the forest and it’s all accompanied by the babbling Neversink in the background.

The Cabin and Barn

The four-bed, two-bathroom cabin sits approximately 100 yards from the river and offers all the amenities one would need. A wrap-around screened in porch is fantastic for outdoor relaxing or entertaining and the entrance into the living and dining area is centered by a wood burning stove, the perfect greeting on a cold winter day. The kitchen is functional and modest with a serving window into the dining area. Two bedrooms and one bathroom on the first floor and two bedrooms and one bathroom on the second, complete with incredible storage rooms.

The original Scarborough post and beam barn is 38’x28’ and approximately 50 yards from the cabin and offers storage for all of your outdoor gear such as canoes, kayaks, boats and ATV’s. The separate tool shed is great for all the smaller tools and equipment.

Rarely does the opportunity arise to obtain such a unique property that carries such rich and impactful history with it. If not used as a private retreat, with municipal approval, it could be converted into a world class fisherman’s retreat with multiple rental cabins. Road frontage on the Claryville Road, Hunter Road, and Shumway Road accompanied with the acreage and private river frontage basically create the perfect storm of opportunity in the Catskill Mountains for a real life Shangri-La.
